Preferred Vol: 1 flocked swab in UTM, tissue in UTM, NP-flexible swab in UTM or CSF in sterile container

Minimum Vol:  1 vial, rectal or throat swabs; 1 mL CSF

 

 

Note: Collection of rectal and throat swabs is recommended. See Enterovirus by PCR for PCR requests on CSF. If both PCR and culture are ordered, separate specimens are required.

Reject due to: Freezing specimens at -20°C is NOT acceptable for viral culture.

Storage location

Monday – Friday: Place sample in the Virology Section of the Sendouts Refrigerated Rack.

Saturday-Sunday & Holidays: Close batch in Mayo Access and courier to UW NW220. Place a copy of the Transfer List (indicate time sent) in the Virology Transport Binder. (Call on Holidays to be sure the lab is open to accept samples).

 

Off-site collection: Transport specimen refrigerated.
