Alanine Amino-Transferase (SGPT)




Alanine aminotransferase is present in high activity in liver, skeletal muscle, heart and kidney.  Serum ALT increases rapidly in liver cell necrosis, hepatitis, hepatic cirrhosis, liver tumors, obstructive jaundice, Reye's syndrome, extensive trauma to skeletal muscle, myositis, myocarditis, and myocardial infarction.

Specimen:  Whole Blood

Container(s):  Gold SST, Lt. Green/Lithium Heparin Microtainer, Dark Green/Sodium Heparin or Gold Microtainer

Preferred Vol: 1.0 mL

Minimum Vol: 0.5 mL


Note:  Test is affected by hemolysis and lipemia.

Reject due to: Marked hemolysis

Spin: Y.  If grossly lipemic, spin in TDX high speed centrifuge in Non Core Chemistry.

Storage location:  CORE 5 Refrigerator



Off-site collection: Avoid hemolysis. Spin blood, send serum or plasma refrigerated.
