Description

Includes culture for Filamentous Fungi. Direct Stain is not performed.

 

This includes fungi such as Aspergillus, Coccidiodes, Histoplasma, Blastomyces, and Fusarium.

 

If Culture for bacteria or yeast on Bone Marrow is desired, see Bone Marrow Culture.

Sample Requirements

 

For detection of Filamentous fungi, collect using a Wampole ISOLATOR Tube.

Specimen: Bone Marrow

Container: Wampole ISOLATOR Tube

Preferred Vol: 1.5 mL

Minimum Vol: 0.75 mL

 

Volume      Recommended Wampole ISOLATOR Tube
0.75 - 1.5 mL Pediatric ISOLATOR tube

 

Wampole ISOLATOR Tubes can be obtained by calling the Microbiology Laboratory (x72585).

 

Note: If provider is requesting culture for both AFB and Filamentous fungi, both cultures can be performed from a single ISOLATOR tube.

Processing Instructions

 

CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing along with the requisition. Micro will prepare paperwork for sendout to UW. Sample must be received at UW within 15 hours of collection. If necessary, sample should be cabbed to UW.

 

Off-site collection:  Collection of Bone Marrow is unlikely at Off-site locations.
