Description

Includes Bacterial Culture and Gram Stain. Specimen cultured for Aerobic and Anaerobic bacteria. This culture type is held for 1 week to allow cultivation of fastidious and/or slow growing organisms (ex: Propionibacterium).

Sample Requirements

Specimen: BD ESwab or Tissue sample

Container: ESwab should be inserted into the tube of Aimes transport media that is provided in the swab collection kit. Tissue should be placed into sterile container.

Preferred Vol: N/A

Minimum Vol: N/A

Please consult the Photo Swab Guide to determine which swab to collect.

Main Campus collection: Sample should be collected on a culture swab, in a sterile syringe, or sterile cup  (for larger volumes) . Both the BBL Culture swab w/ Stuarts media and the Copan FLOQ (available from Central Service) swab are acceptable for both culture and Gram stain.

Regional Clinic Collection: Samples collected at Regional Clinic locations (where specimen set up will be delayed) are optimally collected on a BD Culture Swab MaxV(+), which contains Amies transport media. Samples collected on MaxV(+) swabs are stable at room temperature for up to 24 hours for transport to SCH. An additional swab should be collected without Amies media if Gram stain is required. Either the BBL Culture swab w/ Stuarts, or the FLOQ swab are acceptable for Gram stain.
Steile fluid samples can be collected in a syringe or sterile cup.
Tissue samples should be collected in a sterile container.

Processing Instructions

CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing.  If the sample is shared and only one tube, syringe or other container is received, affix shared sample label and send entire sample plus requisition to Microbiology.

Regional Clinic collection: Samples collected on BD ESwabs are sent to Main Campus Microbiology for culture set up. Swabs should be retained at room temperature until and during courier transport.

Fluid sent in a capped syringe should be set up at the Off-site Labs per Lucidoc instructions. After set up, refrigerate remaining sample. Incubate plates until courier transport.

Tissue sent in sterile container should be sent via cab to SCH Micro for immediate culture set up. Overlay large tissue pieces with Thio broth to keep tissue moist.

Note: if tissue piece is small it can be placed in an ESwab Transport media tube. This tube can then be kept at room temperature until courier pick up.
