Test Code C Q Fluid Duodenal Culture

Biohazard Infectious

Clinical System Name

Small bowel flora quantitative culture

Duodenal Fluid Quantitation

Small Bowel Flora

Quantitative Bacterial Culture for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

Includes Quantitative Bacterial Culture only. No Gram Stain is performed. Specimen cultured for Aerobic bacteria.

The goal of this procedure is to detect bacterial overgrowth. Identification and susceptibility testing is not done routinely. A total colony count of fewer than 105organisms per mL in a duodenal fluid sample is considered a normal result. A total colony count of more than 105 organisms per mL may indicate that overgrowth of bacteria has occurred in the small bowel.

Sample Requirements

Collect sample in a sterile, leak-proof container. Send to the lab immediately. If the specimen remains at room temperature for over 30 minutes prior to plating bacterial overgrowth may occur and produce inaccurate results. If transport is to be delayed, the sample must be refrigerated.

Sample: Duodenal Fluid

Container: Sterile Container

Preferred Vol: 3.0mL

Minimum Vol: 1.0mL

*Solid fecal matter will be rejected. Only fluid bowel contents will be accepted.

Processing Instructions

CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing.  If the sample is shared and only one tube, syringe or other container is received, affix shared sample label and send entire sample plus requisition to Microbiology.

Off-site collection: Send sample to Main Campus for processing. Sample should be refrigerated prior to and during transportation. Sample must be received into the Microbiology laboratory within 2 hours of collection.
