Includes Bacterial Culture. No Gram Stain is performed. Specimen cultured for Group A Strep (Streptococcus pyogenes) and Group C or G Strep (Streptococcus dysgalactiae). Strep Screen cultures are for sites other than the throat (usually rectal). Order Throat Culture for Throat Strep screen. 

Sample Requirements

SCH Main Campus Specimen Collection: BD ESwab is used for sample collection.


Off Site Specimen Collection:   Samples collected at Off-Site locations (where specimen set up will be delayed) are optimally collected on a BD ESwab which contains Amies transport media.


Container: Sterile Container. BD ESwabs should be inserted into the sterile tube of transport media provided in the package.


Preferred Vol: N/A

Minimum Vol: N/A



Processing Instructions


CPA: BD ESwab should be sent to Microbiology for processing.  


Off-site collection:  Strep Screen Cultures are not set up at Off-site Children's Lab locations. BD ESwab Sample should be held at room temperature prior to and during courier transport.  


Other off-site locations: Hold sample at room temperature prior to and during transport to SCH Microbiology. Sample must be received into the microbiology laboratory within 24 hours of collection.
