Stem Cell Assay

Description

The purpose of this assay is to identify and quantify hematopoietic stem cells. The methodology used in this assay is based on the ISHAGE guidelines for dual platform CD34 flow cytometry determinations.

Sample Requirements

Specimen:  Whole Blood

Container(s):  Lavender/EDTA

Preferred Vol:  5 mL

Minimum Vol:  Based on patient's WBC count; consult lab

 

Note:  For clinically useful result turnaround, sample should be drawn before 12 NOON.

Note: If WBC is not ordered on same draw, have Core Lab run specimen through hematology analyzer and attach copy of results with specimen to Cell Markers (not required for specimens to SCCA). 

 

 

  STORAGE LOCATION/SPECIMEN TRANSPORT
M-F Days: Notify Cell Markers Lab when specimen arrives. Transport specimen with copy of WBC to 10th floor Cell Markers (Station #280). Eves/Nights: Store specimen, copy of results, and labels in Cell Markers RT box in CPA.
Saturday

Saturday early morning (MIDNIGHT to 8 AM): Store specimen, copy of results, and labels in Cell Markers RT box in CPA. Days (8 AM to NOON): Notify Cell Markers Lab when specimen arrives. Transport specimen with copy of WBC to 10th floor Cell Markers (Station #280). After 12 NOON: See Sunday instructions.

 

Note: If sample is received outside of SCCA hours (9 AM to 3 PM), notify the ordering provider that the results won't be available until the next day.  If the provider still wants the testing, refrigerate sample and notify next morning shift to send at 9 AM.

 

Sundays & Holiday

1. Call SCCA from 9 AM to 3 PM at (206)288-1200 before sending sample out.

2. Use SCCA CD34 requisition (Green Form) next to Room Temp Sendouts rack.

3. Log in to Delivery Express and select "CPA-CD34 Weekend" from location dropdown menu.

4. Make a copy of the SCCA requisition and the Delivery Express shipping label. Staple together and place labels in Sendouts box for documentation.

 

Note:  If sample is received outside of SCCA hours (9 AM to 3 PM), notify the ordering provider that the results won't be available until the next day.  If the provider still wants the testing, refrigerate sample and notify next morning shift to send at 9 AM.
