Sample Requirements

Specimen: Whole blood

Container(s): Lavender/EDTA or Red or Gold SST

Preferred Vol: 3.0 mL whole blood

Minimum Vol: 1.0 mL whole blood

 

Note: Other acceptable specimen types include: Swab in Universal Transport Medium (UTM), fresh or frozen tissue, ~3mm(cubic millimeters), BAL. Deliver to Lab ASAP. This test can share a tube with other Viral PCR testing but a separate tube needs to be collected if Hematology (CBC, Platelet, ESR, etc) testing is ordered.

Processing Instructions

Reject due to: Dark Green/Sodium Heparin tube

Spin: Y

Aliquot: Y

Temp: -20 C

Storage location: Spin blood within 2 hours of collection, transfer 1 mL plasma to a plastic aliquot tube affixed with a large computer label. Swab or tissue: Freeze within 2 hours of collection.

 

If blood cannot be frozen within 2 hours of collection, it is acceptable to freeze plasma/serum sample within 48 hours of refrigeration as long as it is documented on the batch sheet.
 

Monday – Friday: Place sample in the Virology Section of the Sendouts Freezer Rack.

Saturday-Sunday & Holidays: Close batch in Mayo Access and courier to UW NW220. Place a copy of the Transfer List (indicate time sent) in the Virology Transport Binder. (Call on Holidays to be sure the lab is open to accept samples).

 

Off-site collection: Blood: Spin tube within 2 hours of collection & aliquot serum/plasma - Freeze @ -20°C

Swab or tissue: Freeze within 2 hours of collection.
