Description

Genital wet mounts are examined for the following significant clinical findings: Trichomonas vaginalis, Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes (Neutrophils), Sperm, Yeast, and Clue Cells. The presence of any of these forms is considered a positive result. 

Sample Requirements

Specimen: Vaginal, Urethral or Penile Discharge, Urethral-mucosa scraping, collected with a BD ESwab.

Container: Swab is placed in the tube containing Amies transport media that comes packaged with the swab.

Preferred Vol: N/A

Minimum Vol: N/A

 

Specimen must be examined within 1 hour of collection to detect motile Trichomonas and sperm.

 

 

Processing Instructions

 

CPA: Send sample to Microbiology immediately for processing.  

 

Off-site collection: Off-site Children's Lab locations should set up and read the gential wet mount on site in order to observe viable Trichomonas. Sample should be retained at room temperature and sent to the SCH Microbiology laboratory for confirmatory examination.
