Description

A hematocrit test determines the amount of red blood cells present in ratio to the total blood volume. 

 

Hematocrit levels are useful in monitoring anemia, long term illnes, infection, leukemia, lymphoma, viatmin/mineral deficiency, recent or long-term blood loss, hydration levels, lung disease, heart disease, and polycythemia vera.

Sample Requirements

Specimen: Whole Blood

Container(s):  Lavender/EDTA,  *Heparinized Syringe accepable from OR only

Preferred Vol:  1.0-3.0 mL

Minimum Vol:  0.25 mL (no results guaranteed)

 

Notes: A Lavender top/EDTA vacutainer must contain at least 0.5 mL.
