Important Note

For CSF, this test should only be used for follow-up testing after a positive Rapid CSF Viral PCR Qual Panel.

For initial testing of CSF, use the Rapid CSF Viral PCR Qual Panel.

Sample Requirements

Specimen: Whole Blood or CSF

Container(s): Lavender/EDTA or Red or Gold SST Or CSF Tube

Preferred Vol: 2.0 mL whole blood or 1.0 mL CSF

Minimum Vol: 1.0 mL mL whole blood or 0.5 mL CSF


Note: This test can share a tube with other Viral PCR testing but a separate tube needs to be collected if Hematology (CBC, Platelet, ESR, etc) testing is ordered.

Storage location: Place sample in the Virology rack in the CPA3 freezer. Some providers may request we send this out STAT after hours, but since UW doesn’t run this after hours, we will hold these samples until the normally scheduled Virology batch times.

Monday – Friday: Place sample in the Virology Section of the Sendouts Freezer Rack.

Saturday-Sunday & Holidays: Close batch in Mayo Access and courier to UW NW220. Place a copy of the Transfer List (indicate time sent) in the Virology Transport Binder. (Call on Holidays to be sure the lab is open to accept samples).


If blood cannot be frozen within 2 hours of collection, it is acceptable to freeze plasma/serum sample within 48 hours of refrigeration as long as it is documented on the batch sheet.


Off-site collection: Blood: Centrifuge tube within 2 hours of collection & aliquot serum/plasma. Freeze @ -20°C
CSF: Freeze within 2 hours of collection or ship immediately @ 4°C. If CSF has cells, spin & aliquot clear CSF-Freeze @ -20°C
