Description

Plasma hemoglobin is used for evaluation of hemolytic anemia. Patients on mechanical devices such as the Extra Corporal Membrane Oxygenation Device (ECMO), renal dialysis or heart bypass pump are at risk for hemolysis.

Sample Requirements

Specimen: Whole blood

Container(s): Lavender/EDTA

Preferred Vol: 1 mL

Minimum Vol: 1 mL

 

Note: Avoid traumatic hemolysis (caused by small bore needle, vacuum suction of vacutainer, or rough handling). Plasma needs to be separated from cells within 60 minutes of collection.

 

Processing Instructions

Reject due to: Age of Specimen. Whole blood must be centrifuged and aliquoted within 60 mins of collection. Sample will be rejected if not removed from cells within 2 hours of collection.
