Description

Scotch tape preparations are examined for Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) eggs.

Sample Requirements

Sample should be obtained a few hours after the patient has retired or first thing in the morning before patient arises, showers, or uses the toilet. Use clear Scotch tape and touch all areas of the anal folds. Use caution as eggs are highly contagious. Place the tape sticky side down on a clear glass slide (obtain from Microbiology Laboratory) and place the entire slide with tape in a closed sterile container.

Processing Instructions

CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing. 

 

Off-site collection:  Off-site Children's Lab locations should send to SCH Main Campus for testing. Sample should be kept at room temperature prior to and during courier transport.
