Sample Requirements

Specimen: Nasal MT Swab, Nasopharyngeal Swab, Nasal Wash

Container(s): Univeral Transport Media for NP/MT Swab, Sterile Container for Nasal Wash

Preferred Vol: N/A

Minimum Vol: N/A

Note: Trachs, sputum, pleural fluid and lung aspirate are acceptable specimens though their performance characteristics are still being determined. This test does not detect Bordetella parapertussis or Bordetella holmesii. If clinically indicated, consider ordering a "Pertussis by PCR" to detect these species and send a separate NP swab specimen without UTM transport medium.

Bacterial testing includes: Bordetella pertussis, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
