Sample Requirements

Specimen: Whole Blood and Fluid

Container(s): Red and Sterile Screw-Capped Container

Preferred Vol: 3.0 mL Whole Blood and  0.5 mL Fluid

Minimum Vol: 0.5 mL Whole Blood and 0.2 mL Fluid

 

Note: Collect Fluid in sterile container plus  3 mL blood in RED TOP tube. Failure to provide both serum and fluid will result in cancellation of this test. Specify fluid type on requisition. Blood can also be collected in Dark Green/Sodium Heparin, EDTA Lav, and Lt. Blue Top/Citrate tubes, but Red Top is preferred.

 

Processing Instructions

Reject due to: CSF.  If specimen type is indicated as CSF, the ordering physician must be contacted for verification of actual specimen type.

Temp: 2 - 4 C

Storage location: Spin blood. Transfer 0.5 mL serum to plastic aliquot tube. Aliquot unspun fluid if necessary. Both tubes should be affixed with a large computer label and stored in the CPA refrigerator send-outs rack.

 

Off-site collection: Spin blood & aliquot . Aliquot unspun fluid if necessary. Transport refrigerated.
