Test Code ALK P Alkaline Phosphatase, Serum

Clinical System Name

Alkaline Phosphatase, Serum

Synonyms

Alk Phos

Phosphatase, Alkaline

Description

Alkaline phosphatase is present mainly in kidney, bone, liver, intestine, placenta and lung.  Serum alkaline phosphatase may be elevated in increased bone metabolism; hyperparathyroidism; Paget's disease of bone; carcinoma metastatic to bone; osteogenic sarcoma; and Hodgkins's disease is bones are invaded.  Hepatobillary diseases involving cholestasis, inflammation, and cirrhosis increase alkaline phosphatase activity, as does renal infarction.

Sample Requirements

Specimen:  Whole Blood

Container(s):  Gold SST

Preferred Vol: 0.5mL

Minimum Vol: 1 Lt. Green/Lithium Heparin Microtainer or 1 Gold Microtainer

Note:  Green Top (heparin) or Red Top tubes are also acceptable. Test is affected by hemolysis, prolonged exposure to RBC's, EDTA, oxalate, fluoride & prolonged storage at room temperature. Hemolysis & prolonged room temp storage may result in elevated results.
