Throat Culture


Includes aerobic bacterial culture for Group A Strep (Streptococcus pyogenes). No gram stain is performed. Group C or G Strep (Streptococcus dysgalactiae) and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum are also reported when isolated on this culture.

Sample Requirements

Specimen: Throat sample collected on EZII Double Swab System.

Container: Insert swab into the sterile plastic tube provided in the package.

Preferred Vol: N/A

Processing Instructions

CPA: If only Throat culture is ordered, send sample to Microbiology for processing . If both Throat Culture and Rapid Strep Ag are ordered, send sample to Core lab for testing. 


Regional Clinic collection: If only Throat Culture is ordered, set up Blood Agar plate. Place culture plate in CO2 pouch and incubate at 35°C until courier pickup.

If Rapid Strep test is also ordered:

Perform Rapid Strep Test using 1 of the swabs. If test is negative for Strep A, then use the second swab to inoculate Blood Agar Plate for reflexive Throat Culture. Place culture plate in CO2 pouch and incubate at 35°C until courier pickup.

Cultures are read at appropriate intervals to detect early bacterial growth. STAT requests are not applicable.

Gram stains are not performed on Throat Cultures.
