Method Name

Nephelometry

Method Description

Nephelometry. Immunonephelometry quantitates the alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1A) contained in a 24-hour stool collection. From the concentration of stool A1A and serum A1A, a 24-hour clearance is calculated. In the absence of a serum specimen and/or a timed stool collection, an A1A stool concentration will be reported.(Instruction manual: Siemens Nephelometer II Siemens, Inc., Newark, DE)

Reference Values

Clearance: ≤27 mL/24 hours

Fecal alpha-1-antitrypsin concentration: ≤54 mg/dL

Serum alpha-1-antitrypsin concentration: 100-190 mg/dL

Test Classification

This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Mayo Clinic in a manner consistent with CLIA requirements. This test has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
