Preferred Vol: 4.0 mL
Minimum Vol: 2.4 mL
Note: SUPINE: Obtain sample 8-10 AM, fasting starting at midnight, on a normal sodium diet (100-200 mEq/day).
UPRIGHT: Samples obtained before noon (after at least 2 hours in upright position), on a normal sodium diet.

Reject due to: Serum. Specimens collected in citrate, heparin, or oxalate. Hemolyzed specimens.

Plasma renin activity measures enzyme ability to convert
angiotensinogen to angiotensin I and is limited by the availability
of angiotensinogen. Plasma renin activity is not an accurate
indicator of enzyme activity when angiotensinogen is decreased.
