Important Note

Cardiologist must notify Histology (206) 987-2580 at least 24 hours in advance.  Weekend biopsies should be discussed beforehand with pathologist on call. FRESH (unfixed) sample should be deliver immediately to Histology.

Note:  FRESH (no fixative) heart biopsy must be delivered immediately to 8th floor lab CPA or Histology (OC.8.901) and given to someone's personal charge; identify it as a fresh specimen.  Specific handling instructions may be obtained from Histology at (206) 987-2580.

 

A completed surgical pathology request form including hospital number, name, date of birth, date of procedure, and a completed heart biopsy worksheet  must be submitted with the specimen. 

 

After 1700, deliver specimens to the 8th floor lab CPA. .

Description

Endomyocardial biopsies obtained from the right ventricle are procured to assess the etiology for altered heart function in native or allograft hearts.  Tissue undergoes routine processing with the addition of EM, PCR or culture, as necessitated by clinical setting.
