Container(s): Sterile Specimen Container, Sterile Screw-Capped Tube or Syringe (BAL)
Preferred Vol: 1.0 mL - 2.0 mL BAL or other body fluid
Minimum Vol: none specified (see BAL requisition)
Note: Acceptable specimens: Bronchoalveolar lavage or Bronchial washing. Send fluid with BAL requisition to Laboratory immediately, no fixative. BAL samples from different sites will be pooled for all tests unless otherwise specified. Non-BAL samples will be processed accordingly.

Note: Deliver specimen to Core Hematology. Notify tech immediately. For Non-BAL samples make 4 unstained cytopreps and deliver to Histology.
Storage location: For BAL, refer to BAL requisition for instructions. BAL specimens are often split between departments; ensure shared specimens remain sterile. Cytocentrifuge preparations for pathology are made in Microbiology.
Off-site collection: Send fluid with BAL requisition to Laboratory immediately, no fixative.
For Non-BAL samples make 4 unstained cytopreps ASAP after specimen collection. Do not fix slides.
