Important Note

Special arrangements must be made with Pathologist on call, 12-24 hours in advance, to obtain weekend or holiday results.  Weekend biopsies should be discussed beforehand with Pathologist on call.

Sample Requirements

Specimen:  Tissue

Container(s):  Saline-moistened gauze or telfa (for small biopsy) in sterile specimen container

Minimum Vol:  n/a

 

Note:  FRESH (no fixative)lung tissue must be delivered immediately to Histology (FB.4.555) 
and given to someone's personal charge; identify it as a fresh specimen. Specific handling
instructions may be obtained from Histology at (206) 987-2580. Specimen should be labeled with a valid Tissue Pathology Exam sticker.  

 

After 1700, deliver specimens to Histology (FB.4.555) and place in the refrigerator. Notify the pathologist on call.

Method:  Varies; routine formalin fixation with paraffin embedding and standard sectioning; possible addition of special stains, electron microscopic send out, etc.

Description

Lung tissue is procured from the native or allograft lung to assess etiology of altered function or radiographic findings. Routine processing and histopathology is always performed with addition of EM, culture, etc. as necessitated by clinical setting and histopathologic findings.
