Sample Requirements

Specimen:  Body Fluid

Container(s): Sterile Screw-Capped Container, Sterile Screw-Capped Tube, Syringe, Gold SST, Red

Preferred Vol: 0.5 mL

Minimum Vol: 0.25 mL

 

Note:  Keep specimen at room temperature. Note type of body fluid on requisition. Abdominal, ascites, body, chest, peritoneal, pleural, thoracentesis fluid in Gold or Red tubes are also acceptable. Method is affected by oxalate, exposure to RBC's, and hemolysis. Not affected by heparin, sodium fluoride, or lipemia.

Off-site collection: Note type of body fluid on requisition. Specimen should be centrifuged within 1 hour of collection. Spin body fluid and transfer supernatant to plastic tube and transport specimen at room temperature. Do NOT freeze. Samples are stable for 2 days at room temperature.
