Sample Requirements

Specimen: Whole Blood

Container(s):  Lt. Blue/Citrate

Required Vol: one 1.8 mL tube or one 2.7 mL tube (do NOT over or under fill)

Minimum Vol: N

Note: Cannot be shared with other coagulation tests. Testing must be performed within 30 minutes of collection.

Preferred method of collection is venipuncture with vacuum fill. Test results are affected by incorrect blood volume. Use of a Vascular Access Device for the collection of coag testing is not recommended.

If this method is used it requires a 5 mL waste volume; 3 mL for size 2 French catheter or smaller. Blood must be transferred to the Lt Blue/Citrate tube by use of a blood transfer device to ensure proper fill.

Methodology

Method: Kinetic changes in a sample of citrated whole blood, by the Haemoscope TEG 5000.

Analytical Volume: 1 mL Whole blood

Limitations: Method is affected by failure to perform test within 30 minutes of blood draw.

OR personnel: If you are going to run TEG application, you must be part of the TEG-C security group in IS. If you are not part of this group, when you try to launch the application you will receive errors. Have someone known to be part of this group (anesthesiologist) log on to the pc with their network username and password. Once logged on to the pc, the TEG application should then launch successfully and you should be able to log into the application without experiencing any errors.

Description

The TEG analyzer monitors shear elasticity; a physical property of a blood clot. A computer monitors the resulting data and calculates the curve dynamics. The overall profile can be qualitatively and /or quantitatively interpreted in terms of a HYPO, NORMAL, or HYPER coagulable state of the sample.
