Sample Requirements

Specimen:  Body Fluid

Container(s): Sterile Screw-Capped Container/Tube or Syringe, Lavender/EDTA Tube*, Dark Green/Sodium Heparin tube*

Preferred Vol: 2.0 mL

Minimum Vol: 0.5 mL

 

Notes: Note type of body fluid on requisition and container. Send to the lab immediately for accurate results, cells start to lyse upon standing.

For bloody fluids or synovial fluid CELL COUNTS, collect in a lavender EDTA tube to prevent clotting.

Collect synovial fluid for crystal exams in dark green Sodium Heparin tube. See Crystals, Fluid. Lavender/EDTA and Lithium Heparin tubes may produce crystalline structures resembling monosodium urate in synovial fluid and are therefore not recommended for crystal analysis.

Method:  Manually counted via plating on an iNCYTO hemocytometer and/or Sysmex XN-3000: RF/DC detection method, Flow cytometry with semiconductive laser, photometrically, SLS-hemoglobin method, hydrodynamic focusing
