Sample Requirements

Specimen: Liquid or unformed stool collected in a clean leak-proof container is the optimal sample type.

Rectal swabs are not optimal. In rare situations, exceptions may be made by contacting the Microbiology Lab 7-2585. Swab samples should be inserted at a distance sufficient to have visible stool on the swab (usually requires insertion of swab several centimeters into the rectum). Use the white capped E Swab System for collection.

Formed stool, stool in a fixative or stool received in a diaper are not acceptable specimen types.  These specimens will be rejected for testing. For formed stools in which diagnostic testing is indicated, providers should consider Stool Culture [LAB223].

Container: Clean leak-proof container

Preferred volume: 1 gram or ml

Minimum volume: 0.5 gram or ml

Processing Instructions

CPA: Send stool to Microbiology ASAP. If sample is shared and only one tube, syringe, or other container is received, affix shared sample label and send entire sample plus requisition to Microbiology. Please call Microbiology with sample related questions.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus, vulnificus, and cholera
Cryptosporidium sp

Cyclospora sp

Entamoeba histolytica

Giardia

Astrovirus

Norovirus

Rotavirus

Sapovirus

This test is NOT appropriate for test of cure. Following treatment, the patient can be retested by submitting a Stool Culture, or appropriate EIA testing.

This test should not be ordered more than ONCE per episode of diarrhea (at least 1 week between collections).
