Important Note

This test is only orderable by Seattle Children's Hospital physicians. Ordering this test seeks evidence of acute infection. If so, the patient is contagious and Infection Control must be notified. Priority of testing (STAT vs. Routine) is determined by State Epidemiologist on call (206) 418-5500. Ordering provider must contact State Epidemiologist and then notify Lab of testing priority.

Please call the State Epidemiologist to confirm the correct specimen type(s) required for your patient.

 

Specimen: Buccal Swab (SCH Locations, use the Respiratory Swab Kit to swab buccal cavity.)

Container(s): Respiratory Swab Kit in UTM

 

Note: Collect within 5 days (1 - 3 days is ideal) of onset of parotitis.

 

Note: Refer to the Washington State Department of Health's "Specimen Collection and Submission Instructions" for Mumps RT-PCR.

 

Note: Universal Transport Medium is same as Viral Transport Medium.
