Tracheal Aspirates and expectorated sputums are not acceptable sample types and will be rejected.
Samples collected with BD ESwabs or dry swabs are not acceptable and will be rejected.
Processing Instructions
CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing. If the sample is shared and only one tube, syringe or other container is received, affix shared sample label and send entire sample plus requisition to Microbiology.
Off-site collection: Off-site Children's Lab locations should send the sample to the SCH Microbiology Laboratory for processing. Sample should be refrigerated prior to and during courier transport.
Other off-site locations, refrigerate sample prior to and during courier transport to the SCH Microbiology Laboratory.

Description
Samples are stained with fluorescent antibodies which react with Pneumocytsis jirovecii (P. carinii) forms, cysts, sporozoites and trophozoites, as well as the extracellular matrix present in infected specimens.
