Sample Requirements

Specimen: Drainage from sinus 

Container: Can be collected on a BD ESwab or into a Sterile Container (ex: syringe)

Preferred Vol: N/A

Minimum Vol: N/A

Processing Instructions

CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing. If the sample is shared and only one tube, syringe or other container is received, affix shared sample label and send entire sample plus requisition to Microbiology.

 

Off-site collection:  Sinus cultures are generally not set up at Off-site Children's Lab locations. If sample is sent in syringe, or other sterile container without transport media, it should be sent via Delivery Express to SCH Micro for timely culture set up. If sample is received on ESwab it can be sent via courier to SCH for culture set up. Swab should be held at Room Temp before and during transport.
ESwab samples that are received after the second to the last courier of the day should be sent to SCH Micro via Delivery Express to minimize delay in culture set up and reading.

Cultures are read at appropriate intervals to detect early bacterial growth. STAT culture requests are not applicable.

 

Final incubation time is dependent on the Gram stain results.  See Reporting Information section for additional information.

Bacterial Culture and Gram Stain. Specimen cultured for Aerobic and Anaerobic bacteria.

Reporting Information

Preliminary Report:  18 - 24 hours

Negative Final Report: 2 - 7 days

 

No growth cultures are held for 7 days.
