Sample Requirements
Specimen: Fresh Tissue
Container: Sterile Container, or Amies Transport media from ESwab collection kit.
Preferred Vol: 6 cm3 piece of tissue
Minimum Vol: 0.25 cm3

Processing Instructions
CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing. If the sample is shared and only one tube, syringe or other container is received, affix shared sample label and send entire sample plus requisition to Microbiology.
Regional Clinic collection: Tissue Cultures are not set up at Regional Clinic Lab locations. Samples received at these locations should be kept at room temperature (stable up to 1 hour) and sent via Delivery Express to the Main Campus Microbiology Lab for immediate culture set up. Larger pieces of tissue should be overlayed with Thio broth to keep tissue moist. Small pieces of tissue can be placed in BD ESwab Amies transport media.

Cultures are read at appropriate intervals to detect early bacterial growth. STAT requests are not applicable.

Includes Bacterial Culture and Gram Stain. Specimen cultured for Aerobic and Anaerobic bacteria.
Reporting Information
Preliminary Report: 18 - 24 hours
Negative Final Report: 2 - 7 days
No growth cultures are typically held for 7 days.
