Sample Requirements

Specimen: Whole Blood or CSF

Container(s): Lavender/EDTA, Red, or Gold SST OR CSF Tube

Preferred Vol: 3.0 mL Whole Blood or 1.0 mL CSF

Minimum Vol: 1.0 mL Whole Blood or 0.5 mL CSF

 

Note: This test can share a tube with other Viral PCR testing, but a separate tube needs to be collected if Hematology (CBC, Platelet, ESR, etc) testing is ordered.

Processing Instructions

Reject due to: Plasma collected in Dark Green/Sodium Heparin or Lt. Green/Lithium Heparin.

Plasma and CSF:

  • Monday – Friday: Place sample in the CPA -20 freezer, UW rack.
  • Saturday - Sunday & Holidays: Close batch in MayoACCESS and courier to UW Virology.

Off-site Collection:

  • Whole Blood: Centrifuge and transfer 1.5 mL plasma (Min. 0.5 mL) to a plastic aliquot tube affixed with a large Epic label.  Freeze at -20 C.
  • CSF: Freeze within TWO hours of collection. If CSF has cellular material, centrifuge and aliquot clear CSF. Freeze at -20 C.
