Specimen: Whole blood

Preferred Vol: 1.0 mL
Minimum Vol: 1.0 mL
Note: Avoid traumatic hemolysis (caused by small bore needle, vacuum suction of vacutainer, or rough handling). Plasma needs to be separated from cells within 60 minutes of collection.
Processing Instructions
Reject due to: Age of Specimen. Whole blood must be centrifuged and aliquoted within 60 mins of collection. Sample will be rejected if not removed from cells within 1 hour of collection.

Off-site collection: Specimen should be centrifuged within 1 hour of collection. Spin blood and transfer EDTA plasma to plastic tube and freeze. Send frozen.

Description
Plasma hemoglobin is used for evaluation of hemolytic anemia. Patients on mechanical devices such as the Extra Corporal Membrane Oxygenation Device (ECMO), renal dialysis, or heart bypass pump are at risk for hemolysis.
