Specimen: Whole Blood
Container(s): Lt. Green/Mint Top Lithium Heparin, Lt. Green/Lithium Heparin Microtainer, Gold SST, Gold Microtainer, Dark Green/Sodium Heparin, Red
Preferred Vol: 1.0 mL
Minimum Vol: 0.5 mL
Note: Avoid hemolysis. Protect sample from light. In-patients: wrap paper towel around tube and seal with one piece of tape. Off-site: wrap tube in foil. Specimen stable under fluorescent lighting for up to 4 hours. Method is affected by exposure to UV light, gross hemolysis, and lipemia (very slight lipemia OK).

Off-site collection: Avoid hemolysis. Protect sample from light by wrapping tube in foil. Specimen should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection. Spin blood and transfer serum or plasma to plastic tube and refrigerate or freeze. Specimen stable under fluorescent lighting up to 4 hours.
Note: samples received at North Clinic laboratory will be sent stat to main lab for testing.
