Sample Requirements

Specimen: Urine

Container(s): Sterile, screw-capped container preferred. Clean container also acceptable.

Preferred Vol: 1.0 mL

Minimum Vol: 0.5 mL

 

Notes: Protect sample from light. In-Patients: wrap paper towel around container and seal with one piece of tape. Off-Site: Wrap container in foil.

Do not use cotton balls or gauze to collect specimen. Do not squeeze urine from diaper. Specimen must be received in the Lab within two hours. If there will be a delay, keep the specimen refrigerated (up to 10 hours) and transport on ice. Due to reagent shortage confirmatory testing cannot be done. Order a serum Bili if indicated.

Processing Instructions

Reject due to:  Insufficient quantity, incorrect storage temperature, age of specimen, gross contamination, specimens collected with cotton balls or gauze, specimens obtained from diapers, specimens sent in any preservative solution.
