Sample Requirements

Specimen: Tissue, Normally Sterile Fluid, BAL, Abscess Material, or CSF

Also Acceptable: E-swabs and UTM (Universal Transport medium); Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues (FFPE, PET); non-blood body fluids collected in Vacutainer tubes without preservative; Lavender top (EDTA) tube.

 

Container: Sterile Container

Preferred Vol: 1.0 mL or Grams

Minimum Vol: Diagnostic yield generally proportional to specimen size.

 

Unacceptable: Tissues free-floating in formalin; samples containing citrate, or heparin; Blood/Serum specimens; swab/fluid collected in tube containing agar

Processing Instructions

CPA: Forward all specimens to Microbiology for processing.

 

Microbiology: Keep frozen at -20C and handoff specimen to Send Outs (or CPA after hours). This is a batched test through MayoACCESS and does not require a manual requisition.

 

Send Outs: Send out Monday - Friday with the UW courier unless SCH Microbiology has indicated STAT testing. If STAT testing is indicated, send DIRECT to UW NW220 via Delivery Express courier. AFTER HOURS/WEEKENDS: Batch order to UW or send with manual requisition via DLX courier to NW220.

Availability
