Test Code LAB98 Lead, Venous, with Demographics, Blood

Additional Codes

LEAD WB

Ordering Guidance

If testing is needed on a capillary specimen, order PBDC / Lead, Capillary, with Demographics, Blood.

Specimen Required

Patient Preparation: High concentrations of gadolinium and iodine are known to potentially interfere with most inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry-based metal tests. If either gadolinium- or iodine-containing contrast media has been administered, a specimen should not be collected for 96 hours.

Supplies:

-Metal Free B-D Tube (EDTA), 6 mL (T183)

-Metal Free EDTA 3 mL Tube (T989)

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Royal blue-top BD Vacutainer Plus with EDTA (6 mL) blood collection tube

Acceptable: Royal blue-top BD vacutainer with EDTA blood collection tube (3 mL)

Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. See Metals Analysis Specimen Collection and Transport  for complete instructions.

2. Send whole blood specimen in original tube. Do not aliquot.

Seattle Children's Hospital Note:

Preferred Sample:

The preferred sample type is Whole Blood collected in a Dark Blue/EDTA Trace Element Tube.

Acceptable Samples:

Lavender/EDTA microtainers are acceptable, but only for capillary draws. DO NOT draw venous blood into a Lavender/EDTA microtainer.

Large (4.0 mL) lavender/EDTA vacutainers are acceptable when the sample has not been run through an analyzer. This test can be added on to extra hold lavender tubes but not a CBC specimen or any other tube that has been run through an analyzer.

Forms

1. Lead and Heavy Metals Reporting (T491) or Lead and Heavy Metals Reporting-Spanish (T956)

2. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a General Request (T239) with the specimen.
