Sample Requirements

Specimen: Whole Blood AND Fluid

Container(s): Red AND Sterile Screw-Capped Container

Preferred Vol: 3.0 mL Whole Blood AND 0.5 mL Fluid

Minimum Vol: 0.5 mL Whole Blood AND 0.2 mL Fluid

 

Note: Collect fluid in sterile screw-capped container AND 3.0 mL blood in RED tube. Failure to provide both serum and fluid will result in cancellation of this test. Specify fluid type on requisition. Blood can also be collected in Dark Green/Sodium Heparin, Lavender/EDTA, and Lt. Blue/Citrate tubes, but Red is preferred.

Processing Instructions

Reject due to: CSF: if specimen type is indicated as CSF, the ordering physician must be contacted for verification of actual specimen type.

Aliquot: Y

Temp: 2 - 4 C

Storage location: Spin blood. Transfer 0.5 mL serum to plastic aliquot tube. Aliquot unspun fluid if necessary. Both tubes should be affixed with a large Cerner label and stored in the CPA refrigerator Send Outs rack.

 

Off-site collection: Centrifuge blood and aliquot. Aliquot unspun fluid if necessary. Transport refrigerated.
