For BAL or Nasal Wash with QUANTitative results, order Adenovirus PCR Quant-BAL,Nasal Wash (LAB2477).

For BAL, Nasal wash or other respiratory specimens with QUALitative results, order RpdLowerResp (LAB2449) or RpdUpperResp (LAB3736).

Sample Requirements

Specimen: Bone Marrow, Tissue or Swab(s)

Container(s): Lavender/EDTA for Bone Marrow or Sterile Screw-Capped Container for Tissue or UTM for Swab(s)

Preferred Vol: 5.0 mL for Bone Marrow

Minimum Vol:

  • Bone Marrow: 0.5 mL
  • Biopsy: Pea Size in Sterile Container
  • Paraffin Tissue: DO NOT SEND ENTIRE BLOCK. Slice 3 - 4 slices that are 5 - 50 micron thick in sterile tube.

Note: Acceptable specimens include bone marrow, tissues, or swabs in UTM. Collect bone marrow in Lavender/EDTA, other specimens in sterile container.

Reject due to: No Heparin in aspirate syringe.

Monday – Friday: Place sample in the room temp Send Outs rack.

Saturday-Sunday & Holidays: Close batch in MayoACCESS and courier to UW NW220. (Call on Holidays to be sure the lab is open to accept samples).

Tissue:

Monday – Friday: Place sample in the -20 Send Outs rack or bucket.

Saturday-Sunday & Holidays: Close batch in MayoACCESS and courier on dry ice to UW NW220. (Call on Holidays to be sure the lab is open to accept samples).

 

Off-site Collection:

  • Bone Marrow or Paraffin Tissue: Send at room temperature.
  • Biopsy: Send frozen at -20°C.
  • Swabs: Dry swab or in Universal Transport Media (UTM), send Frozen at -20°C.
