Sample Requirements
Specimen:
- Fluid (non-blood) from normally sterile sites (including Pleural Fluid)
- Gastrointestinal biopsies
- Gastric Aspirates (call Microbiology at ext. 7-2585 for Sodium Bicarbonate, see AFB Culture and Stain for collection instructions)
- Sterile Tissue (Fresh or paraffin embedded)
- Urine
Container: Sterile Screw-Capped Container
Preferred Vol: 1.0 mL of fluid; 1cc tissue preferred
Minimum Vol: Diagnostic yield generally proportional to specimen size.
Unacceptable: Tissues free-floating in formalin; samples containing SPS, citrate, or heparin; Blood/Serum specimens; samples collected on swabs (other than E-swabs)
See UW Test Catalog MTB complex PCR for the complete list.
Note: BAL should be sent as a respiratory specimen for Mycobact TB PCR Rapid Respiratory Xpert (LAB2504).
Processing Instructions
CPA: Forward all specimens to Microbiology for processing.
Microbiology: Keep frozen at -20C and handoff specimen to Send Outs (or CPA after hours) after completing requisition.
Send Outs: Send out Monday - Friday with the UW courier unless SCH Microbiology has indicated STAT testing. If STAT testing is indicated, send DIRECT to UW NW220 via Delivery Express courier. AFTER HOURS/WEEKENDS: Batch order to UW or send with manual requisition via DLX courier to NW220.
