Description
This test is for the detection of CMV in saliva. This FDA-cleared DiaSorin Molecular Simplexa™ test is used to quickly and effectively detect congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, a major cause of hearing loss in infants.
For confirmation of CMV infection in breastfeeding infants, please order a dried blood spot PCR (Order: “CMV by PCR Quant, Newborn Blood Spot”) or Neonatal CMV Urine PCR (LAB3862).
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA is detected via nucleic acid amplification.
Sample Requirements
Specimen: Saliva
Container: Flocked swab in Universal Transport Media (UTM). Please refer to instructions here.
Collection: Saturate swab with saliva. Avoid scraping mucosal cells. Collect saliva at least 1 hour after finishing breastfeeding. Collection immediately following feeding with infant formula is okay.
Preferred Vol: 1 Swab
Minimum Vol: 1 Swab
Processing Instructions
CPA: Send sample to Microbiology.
Off-site collection: Freeze and send frozen sample to SCH Microbiology Laboratory.
Reject due to: Collection other than a flocked swab in UTM (e.g. dry swab, ESwab, cotton swab, swab with wooden shaft, etc.).
