Sample Requirements

Collection Tube type varies based on the suspected pathogen.

 

For detection of Bacteria and Yeast, collect in Aerobic Blood culture bottle

Specimen: Bone Marrow

Container: BacT/Alert PF, yellow cap bottle

Preferred Vol: 1.5mL

Minimum Vol: 0.5mL

 

 

For detection of AFB, collect using an SPS blood Tube.

For detection of Filamentous Fungi, collect using an SPS blood Tube.

Note: Seperate tubes for each test must be collected if both AFB and Fungal cultures are ordered.  AFB and Fungal can not be performed from a single tube.

Preferred Vol: 1.5 mL

Minimum Vol: 0.75 mL

 SPS Tubes can be obtained by calling the Microbiology Laboratory (x72585).

Processing Instructions

 

CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing along with the requisition. 

 

Off-site collection: Off-site Children's Lab locations should send the sample to SCH Microbiology Laboratory for processing along with the requisition. Sample should be kept at room temperature prior to and during courier transport. 

 

Other off-site locations, keep sample at room temperature prior to and during courier transport to SCH Microbiology Laboratory.
