Sample Requirements

 

For detection of AFB, collect using an SPS blood tube.

Specimen: Bone Marrow

Container: SPS Blood Tube

Preferred Vol: 1.5 mL

Minimum Vol: 0.75 mL

 

Volume      Required- SPS Blood Tube
0.75 - 1.5 mL SPS Blood Tube

 

SPS Blood Tubes can be obtained by calling the Microbiology Laboratory (x72585).

 

NOTE: Note: Seperate tubes for each test must be collected if both AFB and Fungal cultures are ordered.  AFB and Fungal can not be performed from a single tube.

Processing Instructions

 

CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing along with the requisition. Micro will prepare paperwork for sendout to HMC Microbiology. Sample must be received at HMC Microbiology within 15 hours of collection. If necessary, sample should be cabbed to HMC Microbiology.

 

NOTE: Send DIRECT to HMC GWH 47 via Delivery Express courier.

 

Off-site collection:  Collection of Bone Marrow is unlikely at Off-site locations.
