Important Note: Bone Marrow should be collected in an SPS tube.  These tubes should be obtained from Microbiology (7-2585) prior to collecting the sample.

**This test should be ordered as a Miscellaneous test (LAB000).  Testing is no longer performed by the University of Washington and is now performed by ARUP.**

Sample Requirements

 

For detection of Filamentous fungi, collect using an SPS Tube.

Specimen: Bone Marrow

Container: Yellow top SPS tube.

Preferred Vol: 7.0 mL

Minimum Vol: 0.5 mL

SPS Tubes can be obtained by calling the Microbiology Laboratory (extention 7-2585) and requesting the tube be sent to the unit tube station.

NOTE: Two SPS tubes (one for each test) must be collected if both AFB and Fungal cultures are ordered.  AFB and Fungal are no longer performed by the same laboratory.

CPA: Hand of sample to send-outs to send to ARUP.  Verify that the test has been ordered as a Miscellaneous test (LAB000). 

Off-site collection:  Collection of Bone Marrow is unlikely at Off-site locations.

Description

This test includes culture for Filamentous Fungus (molds) such as Aspergillus, Coccidiodes, Histoplasma, Blastomyces, and Fusarium. Direct Stain is not performed.
