Specimen: Swab of cutaneous or mucocutaneous lesions

Container(s): Universal Transport Media (UTM)

Preferred Vol: 1 Swab

Minimum Vol: 1 Swab

 

Note:  If ordering a culture in addition to this test, TWO SAMPLES must be collected. Specimen MUST be a swab in universal transport media (UTM). Refrigerate. Swab MUST be placed in UTM at time of collection; RN may pool swabs at the time of collection. This sample may be shared with HSV Qualitative PCR, Swab/CSF.

Reject due to: Collection other than a flocked swab in UTM (e.g. dry swab, ESwab, cotton swab, swab with wooden shaft, calcium alginate swab, etc.).

Description

This test is for the detection of Varicella Zoster Virus from cutaneous and/or mucocutaneous sources. This FDA-cleared DiaSorin Molecular Simplexa™ test is used to quickly and effectively detect VZV infection. VZV DNA is detected via nucleic acid amplification.
