Specimen: Various
Container: BD ESwab - BD ESwab should be inserted into the sterile plastic tube (containing liquid Amies transport media/fluid) provided in the package, sterile syringe or sterile cup for larger volumes.
Preferred Vol: N/A
Minimum Vol: N/A
Dry swabs, such as the BBL Culture Swab EZII Double Swab, are not acceptable for anaerobic culture. Please order a Miscellaneous Culture Aerobic for dry swabs.

Main Campus collection: Sample should be collected on a culture swab, or in a sterile syringe (for larger volumes). The BD ESwab is acceptable for both culture and Gram stain.
Regional Clinic Collection: Samples collected at Regional Clinic locations are optimally collected on a BD ESwab which contains Amies transport media.
Processing Instructions
CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing. If the sample is shared and only one tube, syringe or other container is received, affix shared sample label and send entire sample plus requisition to Microbiology.
Regional Clinic collection: Samples collected on BD ESwabs are sent to Main Campus Microbiology for culture set up. Swabs can be held at room temperature before and during courier transport.
Any fluid/aspirate samples sent in a capped syringe should be couriered to main campus Microbiology stat. Send refrigerated.

Description
Includes Bacterial Culture and Gram Stain. Specimens are cultured for Aerobic and Anaerobic bacteria.
For superficial sources to culture for only Aerobic bacteria, order a Miscellaneous Culture, Aerobic.
For hardware collected for cultre, order a Wound, Hardware Associated Culture.
If tissue is collected for culture, order a Tissue Culture.
Reporting Information
Preliminary Report: 18 - 24 hours
Negative Final Report: 2 - 7 days
No growth cultures are typically held for 7 days.
