Clinical System Name

Wound Culture

Deep Wound

Anaerobic Culture

Sample Requirements

Specimen: Various

Preferred Vol: N/A

Minimum Vol: N/A

Dry swabs, such as the BBL Culture Swab EZII Double Swab, are not acceptable for anaerobic culture.  Please order a Miscellaneous Culture Aerobic for dry swabs.

Please consult the Photo Swab Guide to determine which swab to collect.

Main Campus collection: Sample should be collected on a culture swab, or in a sterile syringe (for larger volumes). The BD ESwab is acceptable for both culture and Gram stain.

Regional Clinic Collection: Samples collected at Regional Clinic locations are optimally collected on a BD ESwab which contains Amies transport media.

Processing Instructions

CPA: Send sample to Microbiology for processing.  If the sample is shared and only one tube, syringe or other container is received, affix shared sample label and send entire sample plus requisition to Microbiology.

Regional Clinic collection: Samples collected on BD ESwabs are sent to Main Campus Microbiology for culture set up. Swabs can be held at room temperature before and during courier transport.

Any fluid/aspirate samples sent in a capped syringe should be couriered to main campus Microbiology stat. Send refrigerated.

Includes Bacterial Culture and Gram Stain. Specimen cultured for Aerobic and Anaerobic bacteria.

For superficial sources to culture for only Aerobic bacteria, order a Miscellaneous Culture, Aerobic.

For hardware collected for cultre, order a Wound, Hardware Associated Culture.

If tissue is collected for culture, order a Tissue Culture.

Reporting Information
